As far as I know, Dodie and Molly started the band. I’m not sure how we knew each other.
When they asked me to play drums, I had no idea how it would be,( I had never really played drums other than messing around at a party ), but I was sure going to try. It sounded like fun and at that age you don’t worry about it. I ended up being replaced by a MUCH better drummer and started singing instead with an occasional guitar part.
My favorite albums before the band were by Dave Brubeck, Miriam Makeba, Bob Dylan, Ella Fitzgerald and Porgy and Bess songs. After joining the band the Beatles were out and I liked the soul groups. I was more interested then, in songs we might perform.
We did mostly covers at first.
I don’t remember any reaction from my classmates. I’m not even sure they knew about it ( except at one point I think we may have played for something at the high school.)
I don’t remember GOP-A-Go-Go.
I remember playing at Cafe What, Central Park at Sheeps Meadow for Helena Rubenstein, and Central Park Zoo for a Private party. Cheetah in New York, Electric Circus, Zackerly TV show, Palace Theater on Broadway Lightworks, Steel pier, Princeton univ., Rider, Temple, Ft Dix, Disco Rama, or Hullabaloo TV show.
I’m not sure.
I don’t know when we played at any particular venues and I couldn’t tell you any favorites. I just loved to play. Period. I enjoyed playing in the basement. And I enjoyed playing with the people in the band. They were the best.
Tom, Geri’s brother was our manager, though in the beginning Molly got us our first gig at Cafe Wha? and Dodie’s brother Pepper got us our first paying gig at Princeton Univ.
I don’t think we played outside the tristate area.
I don’t know how we got with Koppelman and Rubin. I think we started writing more songs after that and I started commuting to N. Y. By bus. The way I remember it, most of the time I walked all the way from Port Authority. Once in a while they would send a limousine to pick us up.
It was fun playing on TV. We were also on the Zackerly TV show.
I loved going to the recording studio. It was a whole new thing. Fun in an entirely different way.
I don’t know exactly what was going on when we broke up. I think it started with parent problems and went downhill from there. We worked so well together. It just wasn’t the same if we had to replace anyone.
I guess Geri has given you a list of our covers. We didn’t limit ourselves musically. People were always telling us that they heard us from outside before seeing us and were shocked when they saw us. They had no idea we were a girl band.
